Alliteration

a figure of speech in which the same sound appears at the beginning of two or more words. Alliterative words are consecutive or close to each other in the text.

Example From Text

Charles looked on wistfully, wiped his watery eyes, but did not get up because of his stiffness.

Explanation

Jack London repeats the "W" sound when he writes "wistfully, wiped his watery eyes" to emphasize Charles's response to John Thornton's attack on Hal. This is the third time that the author has used the same alliteration to describe Charles's eyes. What effect do you think this repetition has on the reader?
